‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Writer Glad Andrew Garfield Is Finally Feeling the Love

Up until the release of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, Andrew Garfield’s brief tenure as the titular web-slinger was viewed as a huge missed opportunity.

The actor was phenomenal in the role, and delivered a pair of hugely accomplished and emotionally powerful performances, but the movies that surrounded him weren’t up to scratch. Sony’s desire to expand the universe at all costs had a disastrous effect on The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in particular, which ranks as the worst-reviewed and lowest-grossing live-action Spidey movie ever.

However, Garfield has been inundated with adulation and fan support ever since No Way Home arrived, with supporters now pushing hard for either The Amazing Spider-Man 3, or for the star’s Peter Parker to take up residence as the friendly neighborhood superhero of Sony’s non-MCU universe.

In an interview with ScreenRant, The Amazing Spider-Man writer James Vanderbilt shared his happiness that the leading man is finally getting the respect and praise he deserved.

“So weirdly, I’d written Spider-Man for Tobey and for Andrew [Garfield], and I love what Tom [Holland] has done with it and what they’ve done within the MCU. So it was just so fun to see that. I always said the best thing we ever did was cast Andrew because I just think he’s such a phenomenal actor, and so to see him getting the love right now and the accolades is just really special.”

Garfield revealed he’d happily suit up again if there was a story worth telling, and it’s something that definitely can’t be ruled out now Sony and Marvel are both leaning into the multiverse.

The studio should act fast, though, because his price will shoot up dramatically if he lands an Academy Award for Netflix musical Tick, Tick… Boom!, which is a distinct possibility when most analysts have it down as a straight shootout between Garfield and King Richard‘s Will Smith as to who emerges as the victor.
