Doctor Who Season 14 Begins Filming With TARDIS BTS Set Photo
The Ncuti Gatwa-led Doctor Who season 14 officially kicks off filming in Cardiff, with a new behind the scenes photo confirming the news.
Filming for Doctor Who season 14 is officially underway. The longest-running science fiction television series in history is scheduled to return for season 14 of its modern revival in 2023. Ncuti Gatwa will be starring as the fifteenth incarnation of the Doctor, to be joined in the TARDIS by Millie Gibson as new companion Ruby.
Principal photography has begun on Doctor Who season 14. The announcement came via the official Doctor Who social media, which also names Dylan Holmes Williams – who previously directed episodes of M. Night Shyamalan’s Servant – as the new season’s inaugural director. The announcement is the latest to drive up anticipation for this new era of the show, following Russell T Davies’ return as showrunner and Gatwa being cast as the titular Time Lord.
Everything We Know About The Fifteenth Doctor
It’s been confirmed also that for Doctor Who season 14, filming has been moved from the show’s previous home at Roath Lock Studios (where it has been based since 2012) to a new site: Wolf Studios. Doctor Who is also being welcomed into the House of Mouse thanks to a distribution deal between Disney and the BBC. This will see the show become available internationally via Disney+ while keeping its BBC home for domestic UK audiences. The deal will also mean a significant budget increase for Doctor Who, paving the way for more ambitious storytelling from the famously low-to-mid-budget sci-fi series.
Ever since it was revealed that Gatwa would be stepping up to play the Doctor, the first Black male actor to do so in the show’s almost sixty-year history, speculation has run rampant over what the next chapter in the Doctor Who story will bring. Gatwa’s casting alone was widely received as indicative of a second-coming resurgence for the show; the actor has been drumming up considerable buzz not only thanks to his breakout role in the hit Netflix series Sex Education, but also due to his casting alongside major Hollywood names like Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the upcoming Barbie movie. Rather than directly succeeding Jodie Whittaker as the Fourteenth Doctor, however, Gatwa will instead count as the Fifteenth thanks to Whittaker’s shock ‘de-generation’ into David Tennant in her final episode. How and why the Doctor has returned to a previous appearance will be explored in three special episodes in 2023 marking Doctor Who’s diamond anniversary.
A brief glimpse at Gatwa’s Doctor was included in the teaser trailer for next year’s specials, wearing what seems to be a dressed-down version of Tennant’s new Time Lord outfit. Fans are already speculating whether this implies the Fifteenth Doctor is trapped in ‘the Edge’, a subconscious realm introduced in Whittaker’s final episode where manifestations of past (and potentially future) Doctors linger. Regardless of the explanation to come, how this unprecedented debut will shape Gatwa’s Doctor is already sowing considerable enthusiasm among the Doctor Who fanbase.
